The Scheiers
The Scheiers are among the most important American potters of the Twentieth Century. Their work is included in, among others, the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cranbrook Academy Museum, Michigan and The Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire.
Some frequently used decorative themes they employed, include biblical stories and primitive imagery.
In 1944 Edwin studied drawing with the Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hoffman. In 1945, after returning from Puerto Rico, he began to make platters. The broad central area of the platters provided an ideal canvas for him to decorate. His interest in primitive themes and imagery was strongly interpreted through his interest in contemporary art, the work of the Abstract Expressionists. His free floating heads on a dark ground, have been compared to works by the surrrealist Joan Miro.
